Most of what I read said to use a business card or a dollar bill folded in half top measure the gap. I would like to use a feeler gauge to get back to square one and eliminate the gap as being part of the issue. For spark, replace the stock plug with an NGK BP6 or similar. Make sure to gap it to .030. If that still doesn't work and you for sure don't have spark then its time to tear the engine apart and get to the coil on the flywheel.
